Best Laptops for Video Conferencing Buying Guide
CPU
The best laptops for video conferencing should have a powerful processor. The processor should allow me to stream videos efficiently without delays. The bare minimum processor should be a newer generation 2-core processor. I recommend the Intel Core i5 processor or later generations for the best experience. This processor allows me to have smooth video calls with my friends and business partners.
I always try to avoid processors that need active cooling. When using such a laptop, the fans will disrupt you and lower the audio quality of your video calls.
GPU
I always go for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. The best laptops for video conferencing should have dedicated graphics cards with quality graphics rendering. By doing so, I'll be guaranteed smooth video playback every time I host online meetings. Besides, I'll achieve quality video rendering, enhancing my experience and making the presentation more successful.
RAM
Zoom is among memory-intensive programs that take up a lot of memory. However, you don't need too high memory capacity - a substantial amount is enough. Thus, I need at least 4GB RAM. However, I prefer 8GB RAM when using Zoom video meetings for the best experience. Remember that the higher the memory capacity, the better the performance.
Feel free to upgrade to higher memory capacities, but I don't see the need. 32GB RAM is overkill for a laptop for video conferencing.
Storage
Once in a while, I host online Zoom meetings with my business associates. I usually record the meeting and save the recordings to my local storage to ensure I don't miss anything. I end up using a lot of space, saving these recordings. My previous laptop almost messed me up because it had limited space. After I got fed up, I opted for a new laptop with more storage space, which serves me well up to date.
I recommend 256GB SSD storage as the bare minimum for a video conferencing laptop. This storage lets me save my video conferencing recordings and other files efficiently. I also prefer SSD storage over HDD because it lets me quickly retrieve my files. Feel free to upgrade to 512GB SSD storage.
Lastly, PCIe SSD or SATA? If you have these options, go for PCIe SSD, which has three times more speed than SATA.
Display
When considering the display for my video conferencing laptop, I always look at the screen size, resolution, refresh rate, aspect ratio, and panel type.
The Screen size is not a big deal; any can do it. An 11-inch display will be OK for video conferencing. However, I can opt for more extensive displays, such as in 15.6-inch laptops, for the best experience. The latter has more space, letting me see more detail of my colleagues' presentations.
Screen resolution plays an important role in video conferencing laptops. I recommend an HD (1366 x 768) resolution as the bare minimum. This resolution is common in budget laptops. However, for the best video conferencing experience, I recommend Full HD 1080p resolution. This resolution has sharp images that fit well on the screen. Besides, it is easy on my eyes; thus, I won't worry about eye fatigue. You can opt for higher resolutions such as 2k or 4k but remember that it will consume more power and lower your battery life.
The panel type affects the image quality, laptop performance, and viewing angles. IPS panels provide the best experience on video conferencing laptops; they have accurate color reproduction and wide viewing angles. Therefore, I can see more detail within my display. Video conferencing also needs a non-reflective display. That's why a glossy/matte screen is highly recommended.
The best aspect ratio for video calling is 16:9. This aspect ratio has the best screen view, improving my online meeting experience.
Ports
The best laptops for video conferencing should have extensive port connectivity. The laptop should have at least an HDMI, audio-out, and two USB ports. These ports will help me connect to external devices, including an external monitor and storage devices. I can also use the ports to charge my phone.
Wireless Connectivity
To host an online meeting, I need to connect to the internet. Thus, the best laptops for video conferencing should have a stable Wi-Fi connection. Besides, it should support Bluetooth wireless connectivity. This feature will help me connect to other Bluetooth devices, like the Bluetooth sound bar, ensuring I hear the presentation well.
Audio
The best laptops for video conferencing should have quality audio. Poor quality audio will affect the effectiveness of a video conference. On the other hand, a high-quality sound ensures I communicate with my colleagues effectively or listen to presentations efficiently.
Before buying a laptop for video conferencing, check its specifications. Ensure the laptop has front stereo speakers. If not, check for the Dolby Surround System Logo. These two should tell you that the laptop has good quality sounds. However, if your laptop has average sound quality, you can buy a high-quality headset to improve the output sound quality.
Battery Life
Web conferences can take long sessions to complete. It will be a shame if my laptop shuts down during a meeting. To avoid this problem, I ensured my laptop had excellent battery life.
The least I can consider is 4 hours of battery life. Most meetings take between 30 minutes to two hours. With a 4-hour battery life, I'll complete the meeting before my laptop shuts down. However, for the best experience, I recommend a battery life of up to 8 hours.
Webcam
Web conferencing requires me to share my live footage with others on the call. The video quality matters most, especially when presenting to an audience. Therefore, I will need a quality, in-built HD webcam for this task.
The minimum webcam for video meetings should be 720p. However, to realize the best experience, you should consider a 1080p HD webcam.
Keyboard and Touchpad
A full-size keyboard with well-fit characters makes typing easier. Therefore, the best laptops for video calling should have full-size keyboards with well-fit characters. A backlit keyboard can make the experience even better.
Portability
You ought to know that there is no fixed location for video conferencing. You can host it anywhere. Therefore, having a lightweight, portable laptop for video conferences will only make sense. The laptop should not be more than 5.0 lbs.
Consider a 2-in-1 Laptop
A 2-in-1 laptop is more versatile than a traditional laptop. If you have the choice, you can go for this laptop. It should have a detachable keyboard or a 360 degrees hinge. With this laptop, I can shift from laptop mode to tablet mode, which is more convenient.
FAQs
How Much RAM Do I Need for Zoom Calls?
I need at least 4GB RAM for Zoom calls. This memory should be enough to facilitate a smooth video conference. However, I recommend 8GB or higher RAM for the best experience. Any additional RAM, such as 32GB, will be overkill.
What Processor Is Best for Zoom?
The best processor for Zoom is the Intel Core i5 processor. It has high processing power that ensures smooth video playback. When screen sharing, you should use a quad-core processor, which has the best experience.
However, a single-core processor can work well for 1:1 video calls.
What Is the Best Laptop for Working Remotely?
The best laptops for working remotely are as follows.
Acer Aspire 5 A515-45-R74Z Slim Laptop
Apple 2021 MacBook Pro
HP 15 Laptop
Acer Swift 3 Thin & Light Laptop
HP Pavilion 15 Laptop
Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 5502 Laptop
ASUS ZenBook Pro 15.6" FHD Touchscreen Laptop
Acer Aspire 7 15.6" Full HD Laptop
How Much Pixels Do I Need for Video Conferencing?
I need 1080 × 1920 pixels for video conferencing. This resolution is the industry standard for quality HD digital video.
However, I discourage video calling with pixels more than 1080p. Zoom usually downsampled contents above 1080p to preserve the bandwidth you use. Therefore, the resultant video will be of poor quality, and the CPU usage will also increase.
