What to Look for in the Best Gaming Monitors Under $100

I used to think I had to spend a small fortune if I wanted to get the most out of my gaming experience. There were times when I would break the bank to get a best gaming monitor to go with my hot new console or computer.

But the more research I’ve done in recent years has shown me that this simply isn’t necessary. There are plenty of reasonably-priced monitors that deliver excellent graphics (and sometimes, sound). For example, you can splash out little more and look for the best gaming monitor under 200.

It’s important to know what to look for, however. You might find a monitor that’s been reduced to a rock-bottom price, only to find out that it doesn’t accommodate your gaming needs.

That’s why I’ve made it my mission to teach you what’s important. I want you to be ready to buy a cheap but amazing gaming monitor under 100 in confidence. In the sections below, I’m going to cover important things you want to keep an eye out for when buying a monitor.

You will soon be on your way to gaming using a cheap gaming monitor without having to empty out your wallet. But first, I want to talk about our reviewing parameters.

How We Choose Our Lineup

To make sure each quality gaming monitor under 100 bucks was worthy of your consideration, I had to research its technical components. It had to have the right specifications before I ever hooked it up for testing.

Anything less than adequate would only serve to be a waste of time; both yours and mine. It’s important to note that what I find worthwhile might not work for you. That’s why I have included a quick rundown of each entry’s technical specifications.

There, you’ll find important information that will make it a lot easier for you to weed out which units are a good fit for your gaming needs.

Firstly, the monitor’s resolution had to be reasonable. After all, playing games on Xbox One console or PS4 on a low-resolution monitor is hardly what I’d call a great gaming experience.

I want you to get your money’s worth. So you can rest assured that what’s included is capable of making your games look pretty.

The same goes for refresh rates - the more the merrier for most games. Many professional gamers use 120 hz. Many games, whether current-gen or last-gen, run at 60 frames per second (FPS). It is therefore important that your high performance gaming monitor be able to keep up with your PC or gaming console.

Screen size of a monitor is a big deal to many gamers (see 32 inch monitors). That’s why I made sure to include all different kinds. You’ll find options for those who prefer lots of screen real estate. Conversely, there are some compact monitors, too.

You also want to consider protecting your eyes. Monitors that reduce eye strain are definitely worth a look. If you’ve never experienced them before, they make a big difference in your overall health as a gamer.

And lastly, the types of panels used in the manufacturing of monitors had to be considered. Modern consoles look the best on modern displays. So I made sure to exclude dated models that didn’t do our games justice.

That being said, I find it interesting that many classic game consoles look better on older TVs and monitors. Funny how that works.

If you’re a PC gamer, this isn’t going to be much of an issue for you. Even if you’re using a classic PC that connects via VGA input ports, you’ll be thrilled to know that the majority of the monitors included are equipped with VGA connectivity.

You won’t find a more affordable gaming monitor for what this unit provides. Sure, it isn’t quite 1080p. But the 1440 x 900 resolution looks absolutely stunning on the 19.5-inch monitor display.

The T3U83AA monitor is ideal for PC gamers only, as it is only capable of using VGA. Console gamers using HDMI ports will have to look elsewhere.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how well this monitor displays games. And it is backlit, with games having great brightness to them. This can be adjusted inside the monitor settings to suit your needs too.

The build and with better image quality impressed me, as well. It’s pretty thin for such an affordable monitor. And the stand allows for easy screen positioning just about anywhere you see fit.

Clocking in at 60Hz, high frame rate games look smooth and precise. On top of that, a wide viewing angle means you can enjoy your games from nearly anywhere in your room.

FULL HD 1920 x 1080 pixels

LG makes back-to-back appearances, this time with the 24M47VQ. As the most expensive monitor I reviewed (but still under $100, mind you), it provides users with one of the best displays for the price.

It comes equipped with plenty of connectivity options, including HDMI, VGA, DVI-D, and D-Sub. You get a lot to work with here, making the 24M47VQ a solid investment that’s worthy of your consideration.

Back to the display, the 1920 x 1080 FULL HD resolution looks stunning on the 24-inch screen size. And thanks to a refresh rate of 60Hz, your games look realistic and fluid during gameplay.

The pixel response time speed is equally impressive, clocking in at just 2 milliseconds. The LG 24M47VQ delivers the goods where it matters the most. And believe me, your games are better for it.

If you’re tight on available space in your room, you’ll be pleased to know that the 24M47VQ monitor is wall-mountable. The 24-inch screen size suits this well, in fact.

The only thing that might prove to be problematic for some hardcore gamers is the design choice and construction. While the monitor feels reasonably solid, the plastic and the stand are low in quality.

That, and the plastic itself is rather reflective. It picks up any and all light sources, which might bother users. I personally didn’t mind it so much, especially considering how wonderful the screen looks in action.

LG 24M47VQ Pros

  • Good connectivity ports
  • Huge screen
  • Wide angles

One of the most effective features  of considered best gaming monitors is FreeSync (see also G Sync monitors). This handy configuration of the monitor from AMD ensures that your games run clearly at all times. If you’ve ever experienced screen tearing, FreeSync makes it a thing of the past.

I can safely say that it works perfectly on the 22MK430H. Games look great, from the graphical presentation to the way motion is handled. This is because you’re getting a monitor with a refresh rate of 75 hertz.

This results in games with high frame rates running smoothly. Colors also look vivid and rich, further bringing your high-definition games to life.

The 22MK430H monitor stands out as having a good selection of available input and output ports. This allows for more connectivity options and versatility.

I’m very pleased with the construction of this gaming monitor. You often expect budget monitor to be subpar in its build and image quality. But that’s not the case here at all.

The 22MK430H monitor feels solid and sturdy across the board. This is especially appreciative when mounting a monitor to the wall, which this unit is capable of doing.

The only potential downside of this monitor is that there aren’t any built-in speakers. I say “potential” because most gamers already have their own independent sound system. Those who don’t will need to either invest in one, or consider a different monitor altogether.

Samsung rounds out the reviews with an incredibly attractive gaming monitor that’s sure to give you your money’s worth.

I included the S22F350FH monitor due to its gaming features, performance, and looks. Personally, I think it’s a very good-looking monitor. It sports an ultra thin design profile that takes up very little desktop space.

You’ll also appreciate the fact that this unit is FreeSync-ready. Screen tearing is handled beautifully, with games looking vivid and complete.

The S22F350FH is equipped with both a high refresh rate and low response time. This means your games with high frame rates are displayed smoothly and accurately at all times.

During my research and testing, I was tasked with narrowing down the best gaming monitor under 100 USD. And while there are several worthy contenders, my ultimate pick goes to ViewSonic’s VS2210-H monitor.

This monitor packed with some truly amazing features that aren’t common in budget gaming monitors. Its high-definition display makes games look crisp and has an awesome color quality. I’m a big fan of visual clarity, and this unit delivers it nicely.

I really appreciate the build-quality of the VS2210-H monitor, as well. You can tell ViewSonic put a lot of research into making sure this monitor holds up to many late-night gaming sessions and web browsing.

This monitor built for both modern and classic games, thanks to it having a VGA port and HDMI port. This makes it easy to switch between a PC and console without having to hook up multi monitor setups.

Another nice addition is the flicker-free performance. When combined with its built-in blue light filter, you’re able to enjoy your games for far longer. The screen is very easy on your eyes, reducing eye strain and fatigue.

I’m also rather fond of the many preset modes found with the VS2210-H monitor. From game to text, there’s a setting that gives your current application its best presentation.

Gamers who don’t have their own independent sound system will be happy to hear that speakers are built into the monitor. They don’t sound the best, but they certainly get the job done.

Lastly, it’s nice to see ViewSonic include a 3-year warranty with the VS2210-H monitor. If there happens to be any manufacturer defects within that time frame, ViewSonic will make it right for you.

How We Test Monitors

No review or recommendation would be complete without thoroughly testing the products. This ensures that they are able to meet the requirements of modern gaming consoles.

After I determined which HD monitors under 100 bucks were compatible, I moved on to testing their performance. If I deemed it capable of delivering commendable graphics and gameplay, it made it to the next round of testing.

For this, I had to make sure it was well-designed and built to last. You don’t want to invest in something that’s only going to need replacing this time next year, do you?

That’s why you’ll find only the best-built monitors included among the reviews section. Lastly, I know this is subjective, but I tried to shoot for amazing gaming monitors that looked like they belonged in a gamer’s room.

Believe me, there are some truly hideous models out there. At least the ones you’ll find here are aesthetically pleasing.

Features to Consider

With that out of way, let’s talk about the advanced features of the monitor you should consider before handing over your money. I touched upon these a moment ago, but I’d like to explain them in better detail.

If you have a reasonable understanding of how these features work, you’ll have an easier time picking out the best monitor under 100 bucks for your needs. Moreover, you’re liking to choose one that serves you well for quite some time.

Take the time to thoroughly research the following additional gaming features so you know exactly what you’re investing your money into. So with that, let’s move on to the first feature.

Refresh Rate

This is one of the most important aspects of gaming monitors. It makes all the difference in how well your games look on-screen. Your monitor model can have the highest resolution available, but if your refresh rate is low, those high quality images are going to suffer.

So, what exactly is the refresh rate? It is essentially how quickly a monitor is able to receive information from the console or computer and draw in on-screen. The faster it can keep redrawing each frame, the smoother your games will look.

You’ll find this feature listed within each entry’s specification box as “XXHz”, where XX is the number of the speed, and Hz is hertz, or the rate of speed.

If you recall, we talked about many games running at 60 frames per second. A monitor that is capable of refreshing the screen at 60Hz will be able to display those aforementioned games smoothly and accurately.

A good rule of thumb is 1 frame equals 1 hertz. Thus why a 60 FPS game looks so good on a 60Hz monitor.

It’s possible to go above 60Hz, with games looking almost surreal in their fluidity. You’ll be pleased to know that all of the monitors I included are at least 60Hz.

Screen Resolution

Anyone who has been into casual gaming for any amount of time knows how important screen resolution of a monitor is in making your games look good.

For modern games, regardless of whether they are played on a PC or console, a display resolution of 1080p is needed to display them in all their glory.

I have included each entry’s resolution details in their respective specifications box. When you see a monitor out in the wild, this detail is listed as something like FULL HD 1920 x 1080.

The first number is going to be how many pixels the HD monitor can display horizontally. The second number is the amount of pixels displayed vertically.

I made sure to include as many 1080p monitors under 100$ as I possibly could. In fact, all but one fall under this category.

As you’ll soon discover, the only one that didn’t make the cut is the most affordable entry among the reviews. Still, it comes pretty close. So your games will look pretty nice regardless.

Panel Types

Manufacturers use different panel types in the production of their monitors. Depending on the type of game you’re playing, certain panels will look better than others. With that said, let’s take a moment to review the panel types you’re likely to come across.

IPS Panel

IPS (In Plane Switching), IPS panels are often your best bet for displaying games at their very best. Not only will images look clear and sharp, but frame rates are smooth, too.

You can also look forward to your games looking colorful and vibrant. Gamers often prefer these types of monitors over others due to their exceptional display properties. Their viewing angles are often much better, as well.

TN , or Twisted Nematic, panels take a hit in graphical clarity in favor of better motion handling. High frame rates typically look even better on TN panels than they do on IPS  panel ones.

With TN panel type, it’s all about smooth performance. The graphical presentation takes a backseat so that your games run at their very best.

1. What is the best gaming monitor under 100 USD?

Here are the Top 3 Gaming Monitors Under 100 that we can recommend.

1. ViewSonic VS2210-H -
It’s packed with some truly remarkable features that aren’t common in budget-friendly or cheap gaming monitors. Its high-definition display makes games look crisp and colorful. I’m a big fan of visual clarity, and this unit delivers it nicely.

2. HP T3U83AA -
The T3U83AA is ideal for desktop gamers only, as it is only capable of using VGA. Console gamers using HDMI will have to look elsewhere.

3. LG 22MK430H-B -
One of the most effective features in gaming monitors is FreeSync. This handy configuration from AMD ensures that your games run clearly at all times.

2. Are gaming monitors worth it?

Absolutely. There is little point in having the best gaming laptop or PC with the most powerful components if you do not have a monitor with a high enough refresh rate to display those high frame rates. Purchase one for yourself!

3. Is 1080P good for gaming?

1080P is the optimal resolution for competitive gamers. Thus, while the game may appear slightly better on a 1440P or 4K monitor, players will benefit from a higher refresh rate over a higher screen resolution.

4. Does Hz affect FPS?

Your monitor's refresh rate (Hz) has no effect on the frame rate (FPS) that your GPU will output. In this case, the refresh rate of the monitor is irrelevant, as the frame rate is simply used to quantify gaming performance. A faster frame rate is preferable for fps games.

5. Is 75Hz good for gaming?

Yes. Of course, 75Hz and even 60Hz are still viable options for gaming. It occurs when your PC can render game frames at a rate greater than 75 frames per second. Therefore, if the frame rate is less than 75, budget monitors for gamer should opt for a 75Hz monitor to save money.
